Psychosocial support for survivors of war and forced displacement.
The conflict in Sudan has caused one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises, forcing millions of people to flee their homes and leaving countless families separated. Many survivors have witnessed the loss of loved ones, destruction of their homes, displacement, ethnic violence, sexual violence, arbitrary detention and other traumatic events. Children have lost access to education, witnessed violence, and in some cases been separated from their parents or exposed to recruitment by armed groups. Women and girls have faced heightened risks of sexual and gender-based violence, exploitation and the burden of caring for their families in extremely difficult circumstances. Entire communities have seen their social ties broken by fear, displacement and conflict, making it harder to trust one another and rebuild peaceful relationships.
These experiences have profound emotional, psychological and social consequences. Many survivors continue to live with grief, anxiety, depression, traumatic memories and uncertainty about the future. Through counselling, safe spaces, group support and community-based activities, TRAID helps survivors regain hope, strengthen resilience and rebuild their lives with dignity while supporting families and communities on their journey toward healing and recovery.
Our Trauma-Informed Approach
We create a safe place where survivors can talk, be listened to and receive support without fear of being judged.
We Listen
We create a safe space for survivors to speak about their experiences a respectful and supportive environment. Survivors can choose to participate in individual counselling, family counselling or group support sessions, depending on what feels most comfortable for them.
For survivors who are unable to visit our centre, social workers visit them at their conduct home to provide counselling, emotional support and follow-up. We never force anyone to share their story. Every survivor decides what they want to share and when they are ready to speak.
We Create Safe Spaces
We provide safe and welcoming spaces at our centre where women, children and families affected by war can come for counselling and emotional support. Our trained counsellors and social workers are there to listen, provide guidance and help survivors in a caring and respectful environment.
Everyone is treated with dignity and compassion. Survivors can talk openly without fear of judgment, discrimination or blame. Our goal is to help people feel safe, supported and accepted as they begin their healing journey.
We Protect Privacy
We treat every survivor’s story with confidentiality. Information shared during counselling or support sessions is only documented or shared with the survivor’s informed consent.
For children, consent is obtained from a parent or legal guardian before collecting, documenting or sharing their stories, photographs or personal information
We Respect Every Survivor
We believe that every survivor of the war in Sudan deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion and respect. We provide the same care and support to everyone, regardless of their ethnicity, tribe, religion, political background, gender, age or nationality.
War has affected people from many different communities. At TRAID, we do not discriminate. We welcome every survivor and provide a safe place where they can heal, recover and rebuild their lives with hope and dignity.
Our Psychosocial Support Services

One-on-one Counseling
We provide one-on-one counselling for survivors affected by war, displacement and violence. Our trained counsellors offer a safe and confidential space where survivors can talk about their experiences, receive emotional support and learn healthy ways to cope with trauma, grief and stress.

Family and Group Counselling
War affects entire families and communities. We facilitate family counselling and group support sessions where survivors can share experiences, encourage one another, rebuild trust and strengthen relationships in a respectful and supportive environment.

Home Visits and Survivor Follow-Up
Some survivors are unable to visit our centre because of illness, disability, financial challenges or other circumstances. Our social workers conduct home visits to provide counselling, emotional support, monitor well-being and ensure survivors continue receiving the care they need.

Referral and Case Management
Some survivors need additional support beyond counselling. We assess each person’s needs and, with their informed consent, refer them to trusted partners for medical care, legal assistance, child protection, gender-based violence services, education, livelihood opportunities and other specialised support. We follow up to help ensure survivors receive appropriate care.
The Impact of Our Psychosocial Support Program
Since launching our psychosocial support program, TRAID has provided emotional support, counselling and referrals to refugees, displaced people and survivors affected by the war in Sudan. Through our survivor-centred approach, we continue to help individuals, families and communities begin their journey toward healing and recovery.
